Norway could become the first nation to make deep sea mining happen on a commercial scale if the country's parliament approves a plan to open ocean an area larger than the United Kingdom to the new industry. The mining could provide a source for such metals as copper and rare earth elements for the transition away from fossil fuels. He did not say whether SV would make support for the government's budget conditional on the issue. Still, Haltbrekken said deep sea mining was "high on our agenda" and "an important issue for us". In 2021, SV blocked the government's plans to conduct oil and gas exploration licensing round in frontier areas.

I’ve been diving ever since, and on expeditions to some of the most remote parts of the globe, since age 7. My grandfather, Jacques Cousteau, was a pioneer of ocean exploration who, over many decades, engaged millions of people around the world in sharing his passion. In the endless void of space, our fragile blue planet harbors virtually all life that we know, cherish and depend on. The ocean is earth’s life support system, without which we cannot exist. There is no other known planet that can sustain our species.

Ocean secretsA bioluminescent jellyfish is shown in an image taken during exploration of the Marianas Trench Marine National Monument. NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration/APThe deep ocean is an alien landscape that scientists have only just begun to understand. So much remains to be explored because reaching the bottom of the ocean is an incredibly difficult task. But the ocean depths have much to offer, including lifesaving compounds and the secrets of how life on Earth evolved. The event is nearly 10 months away, but people are already anticipating the total solar eclipse that will pass over Mexico, the US and Canada on April 8, 2024.

An image showing boots partly buried in a sandy seabed was captured in 2004 and shows items from the wreckage of the Titanic in 1912. The photograph was not taken following the search for the Titan submersible in June 2023. The image shows the bottom part of two boots protruding from the sea floor, partly buried alongside other debris. But the images show wreckage from the Titanic ocean liner captured in 2004, not debris from the Titan submersible in 2023 (here). The image of boots on the seabed shows items from the wreckage of the Titanic captured in 2004, not the Titan submersible in 2023.

Cameron, who is also the director of the Oscar-winning movie “Titanic,” has shared his perspective on the “catastrophic implosion” that killed five aboard the Titan submersible on its way to tour the Titanic wreckage. The youngster would also track a then new deep-sea submersible named Alvin. “It was such a golden age of technological exploration,” Cameron said of the time. Cameron told NPR in 2012 that there is a connection between what he does professionally in films and his personal life as an explorer. “But it has problems, because there’s no second take!”Record breaking explorationAlong with his exploring, Cameron fell in love with the technology that makes deep-sea diving possible.

What lies at the bottom of the ocean?

What lies at the bottom of the oceanWhile what’s considered the deep ocean extends from 3,280 feet to 19,685 feet (1,000 meters to 6,000 meters) beneath the surface, deep-sea trenches can plunge to 36,000 feet (11,000 meters), according to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts. Alessandro Mancini/Alamy Stock PhotoWhy mapping the ocean is so challengingFrom a strictly scientific perspective, touristic trips to the ocean floor do little to advance our understanding of the ocean’s mysteries. “We want to go to the highest, the lowest, the longest.”But only a “very small percentage of the deep ocean, and even the middle ocean, has been seen by human eyes — an infinitesimal amount. “However, 150 years of modern oceanography have led to better understanding of many aspects of the ocean such as the life it contains, its chemistry and its role in the Earth system.”Mapping the ocean “helps us to understand how the shape of the seafloor affects ocean currents, and where marine life occurs,” Rogers added. Researchers say the ocean and the life it contains could provide answers to some of medicine’s biggest challenges, such as antibiotic drug resistance.
